PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
MESSAGE TO COMMUNITY
Today is the last day I will be at Bulimba as Principal for 2019. As previously mentioned I applied for the role of Acting Principal at Mansfield State School for the remainder of 2019 and was the successful applicant. Within the Department of Education there are occasions when school leaders have the opportunity to work in different roles or positions due to incumbent leaders being on leave, being promoted or acting in other roles. This means that my position at Bulimba is my substantive position and I could return at the end of my acting term, depending on what happens with the Mansfield State School Principal position. This is similar to Sheryl Kennedy’s acting role as Principal at Morningside State School.
As I leave to act at Mansfield unsure of what the future will hold I would like to thank the community of Bulimba State School for their support over the last 24 years of my leadership. There have been many changes during this time and significant growth. Bulimba State School is truly a very special place I have enjoyed the energy and commitment of the staff, their striving to provide an education that supports the learning of all students, their loyalty, precision and collaboration. There are many staff who quietly go about their job offering support to children and families beyond what is expected, but that is what great teachers do and you are truly blessed with many great teachers, teacher aides and support staff.
I believe I leave Bulimba in a healthy state with a clear vision, “Engaged Learner, Creative and Critical Thinkers and Ethical Global Citizens”. We are working hard to reform our approach to curriculum through Inquiry Based Learning, Authentic Assessment and making learning real. The school leadership team through a “Spiral of Inquiry” (a research tool) have designed a clear plan to move forward. This will involve new learning for staff, structured planning and implementation and careful monitoring to adjust and modify. We are well on the way to completing our Student Code of Conduct and will share this with the community during Term 3.
To the wonderful students of Bulimba who over the years have confirmed to me that I have the best job in the world, I thank you all. The stories I hear of our past students and the way they have made for themselves in life inspires me. As always I encourage you to remember that you come from Bulimba State School, it is part of your story and your heritage, it is a place you are always welcome.
To the parents thank you for entrusting me with your precious children, I hope I have been able to instil a love of learning, a respect for others and the knowledge that with effort they can achieve things over time.
Thank you Bulimba.
BLUE CARD
The requirements for volunteers and staff in schools regarding Blue Cards (Working with Children) changed in legislation last year. It is mandatory that any person other than the parents or legal guardians of a child attending the school who is volunteering must hold a current Queensland Volunteer Blue Card. This includes volunteers who are uncles, aunties, grandparents, nannies, next door neighbours or community members.
If you are volunteering in the school or have someone volunteering you need to apply for a Blue Card, please follow the link below.
https://www.bluecard.qld.gov.au/pdf/forms/DJAG001-BC-Blue-card-application.pdf
Volunteers cannot commence volunteering until they have a current Blue Card (Working with Children). This is required by legislation and can have legal ramifications for the volunteer and the school.
Teachers have an exemption from the Blue Card (Working with Children) process through their teacher registration but if volunteering outside the school e.g. as a coach in a sporting club will be required to obtain an Exemption Volunteer Blue Card.
Staff at Bulimba other than teachers are required to have a Blue Card (Working with Children).
TOILET BEHAVIOUR
Over the last couple of weeks we have needed to discuss the behaviour of students in the school toilets. It is important that students are respectful and use toilets appropriately. Toilet behaviour can be expressed very simply in four words.
GO FLUSH WASH LEAVE
Please discuss with your children that toilets are not a place to play, eat food, make a mess, waste toilet paper and that the toilet or urinal is where you go.
LOST PROPERTY
As the colder weather approaches more articles of clothing are coming to school. Please make sure all items are named, that you or your child checks lost property for missing items and you only take what is yours.
ACTING ARRANGEMENTS
From Monday 3 June Ms Jillian Blennerhassett will be acting as Principal until the end of term 2. Ms Karen McCullagh will be acting as Deputy Principal P-2 until the end of Term 2. During the remainder of this term a Regional process to recruit an acting Principal for Semester 2 will be completed. The school community through the school council will have input into this process.

The envelopes for ordering photos have been sent home with your child on Wednesday please remember that these envelopes are to be handed straight to MSP photography on photo day. Please see the timetable attached. Sibling photo forms are available from the school office.

STUDENT COUNCIL– FREE DRESS DAY
The student council have organised a free dress day on Tuesday June 18 (week 9). A gold coin donation is asked for and the money will go to supporting our Ecomarines in their quest to save the bay.
The theme is ‘Upcycling’. The idea is to save money on buying new clothes so students are invited to wear clothes that have been outgrown by older siblings, cousins etc.
If this is not possible, due to being the eldest, tallest etc, students should wear Blue or Green to support the Ecomarines.
RECONCILIATION WEEK
On Monday, we recognised National Reconciliation Week at Parade. National Reconciliation Week is celebrated each year from 27th May to 3rd June. It is a time to celebrate and build on positive and respectful relationships and connections between Australians and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Thank you to the students who shared their family history.

REPORT CARDS
Student reports will be emailed home at the end of this term during the first week of the holidays.
When report cards were emailed home at the end of last year, a number of service providers saw the report card mail out as spam, causing the email with the report card to be delivered into people’s junk/spam folder rather than their inbox. Please add OneSchool.application@dete.qld.gov.au to your ‘safe senders list’ so your child’s Semester 1 report card will be delivered to your inbox at the end of the term.
If your email address has changed, please let the office know by Monday 24 June. If you advise us after this date we cannot guarantee that you will receive your child’s report card at the end of Term 2. Our school office will be closed over the holiday period.
SAKGP
Grade 6 had SAKGP this week. We made minestrone soup. Kale pesto. Cheese and herb scones.
Lemon myrtle and wattleseed biscuits.

YEAR 3 MUSEUM EXCURSION
This week the Year 3 student cohort have visited the fabulous Queensland Museum. Science demonstrations (Sparklab) were based around our current classroom concepts of heat, heat transfer, flammability and the properties of matter (liquid, solid and gas).
The experiments and the demonstrators enthralled, informed and extended the students’ conceptual understandings in the field of physics.
The ANZAC Legacy was very interesting and the interactive displays and devices exemplified, highlighted and detailed the significance of the contribution and sacrifices of “ our diggers” .
Finally the NASA exhibit was very memorable, with an astounding display of real and modelled space artefacts ranging from early space travel items to equipment and full size reproductions of rockets. modules, buggies and other equipment from the Apollo missions.
Thank you to all the generous Year 3 parents who made this excursion possible and to Miss Morgan Biscoe for her thorough organisation of this invaluable educational experience.

Our library opening hours are from 8am – 3.00pm. Children need to be accompanied by an adult if they visit the library before 8.15am.
BOOK RECOMMENDATION
The book, ‘Once’, is a must read. It is factual in its history of the aftermath of World War 2. The story itself is fictional and entertaining for those interested in history. ‘Once” was written by Morris Gleitzman and is part of a series of other books written about the lives of the people living in a world created by the author.
I would recommend this to children/teens 9 years or older because it describes gore in a graphic and realistic way.

BULIMBA STATE SCHOOL OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE
Wunya! Hello! Gurumba bigi! G'day!
We want to send out a MASSIVE thank you to all of our extended community members who got involved in our Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea last Thursday morning! We were so chuffed to see so many of our OSHC kids, families and Bulimba State School teachers getting involved with cooking and baking, donating delicious food and yummy tea, decorating under B block for the big event, making gold coin donations, and of course, simply spending time on the morning with our community supporting such an important cause! 1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85 and it was brilliant to see everyone working together to support the Cancer Council in their mission to change this! We were more than chuffed to see that we had raised over $90 in total for the Cancer Council, and we certainly hope to continue organising these charitable endeavours in the future. We just love seeing our OSHC kids and families choosing to spend their time to help out and actively participate in our community, ultimately helping to develop our strong sense of belonging!
We are also getting very excited to commemorate National Reconciliation Week at Bulimba OSHC with our community gathering on Tuesday afternoon! We are very much looking forward to welcoming the Yerongpan Dancers for a Traditional Welcome to Country, Didgeridoo Performance and Smoking Ceremony! National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Here at Bulimba OSHC, we have organised a whole week of play and learning experiences that are focused on the importance of National Reconciliation Week in order to inspire conversations that will develop all of our understandings and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives in pursuit of reconciliation.
