Celebrating a Special Honour in Our School Community
2025 Bulimba Electorate Queensland Day Awards
Taria-Jane Somers, a dedicated parent and the Secretary of our P&C, was recently nominated for the 2025 Bulimba Electorate Queensland Day Awards. These awards celebrate the people who go above and beyond to make a positive difference in the local community and Taria-Jane is a shining example of this spirit.
Taria-Jane’s nomination is a reflection of her incredible commitment to our school. As P&C Secretary, she works tirelessly behind the scenes to support events, improve resources, and strengthen the connection between families and the school. Her energy, generosity and advocacy have made a meaningful impact on both staff and students, and she continues to play a key role in fostering the supportive culture we value so highly here at Bulimba State School.
On behalf of our school community, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Taria on this well-deserved recognition and thank her for everything she contributes to our school. A big thank you also goes to Claire Conwell for nominating Taria for this prestigious award and recognising the difference she makes to our school community.
The Power of Sleep: Supporting Your Child’s Learning and Wellbeing
As parents and educators, we often talk about healthy lunchboxes, regular physical activity and homework routines, but one of the most vital contributors to your child’s success at school is something that happens before the school day even begins: a good night’s sleep.
Sleep is essential for your child’s brain development, memory, mood regulation and ability to concentrate. Children aged 5–13 years generally need 9–11 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night to function at their best. When students are well-rested, they are more likely to be engaged in learning, solve problems more effectively, and manage their emotions in social situations.
Lack of sleep, on the other hand, can show up in many ways — difficulty focusing, increased irritability, frequent emotional outbursts, or physical signs like headaches.
Here are a few simple tips to help support healthy sleep habits at home:
- Establish a regular bedtime and wake-up routine, even on weekends.
- Create a calm, screen-free wind-down period at least 30–60 minutes before bed.
- Encourage physical activity during the day to help children feel naturally tired by evening.
- Keep bedrooms cool, quiet and dark, and use beds only for sleeping (not for homework, screens or snacks).
We know that life can get busy, and routines aren’t always perfect. But prioritising sleep is one of the most powerful ways we can support our children to feel good, learn well and thrive at school.
If you have any concerns about your child’s sleep, please don’t hesitate to talk with your child’s teacher or your GP.
P–2 Writing Update
Term 2 has flown by and it’s hard to believe we are nearly at the end of Semester 1! There has been so much growth in our early years learners this term, particularly in the areas of reading and writing, which have been the focus for the Term 2 English unit of work.
In Prep, our youngest learners have been making big strides in their writing. They’ve progressed from writing CVC words in isolation, to now sounding-out and writing topic words and simple sentences about an animal. There’s been a strong focus on building the fundamentals of writing a simple sentence, including writing left to right, using finger spaces, starting with capital letters, and ending with full stops. It is a joy to see students applying their phonics knowledge to stretch out sounds and build words in their simple sentence. Each child has a writing goal that their teacher has provided, along with a visual reminder to help them remember what they are working on in their writing.
Students in Years 1 and 2 have really enjoyed diving into the world of information texts this term. They have become particularly proficient in using topic-specific vocabulary and descriptive language to explain animals (Year 1) and life cycles (Year 2). Our classrooms are buzzing with purposeful learning, as students actively use the learning wall, taking cues from success criteria, referencing class texts, and checking off their own learning goals.
Open Classrooms a Huge Success
Thank you to the many families who visited our classrooms on Tuesday and Wednesday for our Open Classroom event. It was great to see students proudly take on the role of tour guide, explaining their learning journey in English, pointing out features on the class learning wall, and sharing the learning goals they’ve been working towards.
This event is a wonderful way to build partnerships between home and school, and to give students a real voice in sharing their progress. Thank you for embracing this initiative. Open Classrooms will return in Term 4.

Year 5 Students Celebrate National Buddy Day at Harmony Kindergarten
One Monday, some Year 5 students were selected to visit Harmony Early Education Kindergarten to celebrate National Buddy Day. It was a lovely morning filled with games, and meaningful connections as our students spent time playing and learning alongside the kindy children.
The visit was part of Bulimba State School’s kindy network initiative, a program we’ve established to strengthen connections with local early childhood centres and support a smooth transition from kindy to school. Harmony is one of several kindergartens we collaborate with as part of our network group.
Our Year 5 students were outstanding role models throughout the visit, showing kindness, leadership, and a genuine enthusiasm for connecting with their younger buddies. We look forward to creating more opportunities for our school to connect with other early learning centres throughout the year.

Junior Sports Day
Junior Sports Day is one of my favourite events of the year and students in Years 1 to 3 showed up today with so much enthusiasm and resilience as they completed their rotation stations. Huge thanks to Mr Bryant for his energy and detailed planning, and to our Year 6 sports captains and staff who made the morning such a success.
A special shoutout goes to all the parents who came along and of course, the ever-competitive parent race was a crowd favourite once again!
Prep students can look forward to their own special sports event which will take place next term. Stay tuned for the date!

Tickets for our major social event of the year, "The Big Night Out", are on sale now at www.bulimbasspc.org.au/bno. Our theme is "Let's Dance" and this year we’ve made some exciting changes! Our winning team on the night will be a combination of Dance Performance and Auction Item.
DANCE - Each team selects an iconic movie dance scene to rehearse and perform at the event. Come dressed to suit your scene. You have the option of pre-recording the dance routine if you are a bit shy about performing live or simply come along and watch! On the spot prizes for teams that dance on the night.
AUCTION - Each team donates an item for auction, utilising connections, skills and creativity of team members. Build it, buy it, or borrow it and help us knock our fundraising target out of the ballpark! Over the years, teams have spent more and more money on table decorations that mostly get thrown in the venue’s skip bin the following day. We thought it would be great to (a) stop the landfill and (b) redirect that creativity into raising money for the school and our kids.
Your ticket includes a delicious array of finger food throughout the night (the event is being run by our VP David Finlayson, chef and hospitality extraordinaire), a welcome drink, 5 raffle tickets, live entertainment and a few more surprises along the way. Lots of comfy seating, high tables, low tables, lounge areas, and chill out spaces.
Gather your team and grab your tickets before they’re all gone! We can’t wait to see you there. Email the team for more info: events@bulimbasspc.org.au
