DEPUTY PRINCIPAL PREP - YEAR 2
Term 1, Week 3 P-2 News
Welcome back, everyone! The 2025 school year has kicked off wonderfully, and our students have transitioned seamlessly into their new classroom routines. I’d like to extend a big welcome to all our new families and to the incredible prep students who have transitioned so well in their first few weeks of school.
It feels like just yesterday we were conducting prep enrolment interviews and hosting transition sessions for our pre-prep students, and it’s truly rewarding to see these children confidently embracing school life. Our prep students have already been busy learning about classroom routines, playground expectations, and how to transition to and from specialist lessons throughout the week. Our prep teachers, teacher aides, and support staff have been amazing in setting our little learners up for success.
The transition to school is not only a big step for our prep students, but also for our families, especially those experiencing this for the first time. No doubt you are also adjusting to your new school morning routine, by preparing lunch boxes and ‘brain food’, keeping up to date with the classroom happenings, such as booking a parent-teacher interview or remembering to pack your child’s library bag, and arriving to school on time or strategically timing when to get a good car park! We truly appreciate your ongoing dedication and support and are excited to partner with you as we navigate these early school years together.
During my daily visits to each class, I asked students what has been their favourite part about starting Prep. Here’s what they have to say:
I love…
- Playing at the playground
- Getting my Bee Token – “Be Responsible”
- Making new friends
- Saying goodbye to my mum and dad
- Learning how to read and write
- Writing our names
- Drawing
- Going to OSHC and going to the Hall to play dodgeball
- Visiting other parts of the school, like the bottom oval
- Learning and writing
- Home time!
Our Year 1 students have made a smooth transition into the new school year and are already deeply engaged in their learning. It brings us so much joy to step into a Year 1 classroom at the start of the year and see children independently sounding out words as they write, carefully considering how they represent the sounds in each word. The success of Sounds-Write, our evidence-based program for teaching reading, is evident not only in the students' growing reading abilities, but also in their writing and spelling.
This term, Year 1 students are exploring how to share ideas and express opinions about a character from a familiar story in their English unit. So far, they’ve enjoyed listening to a variety of stories and diving into discussions about the main characters. I look forward to visiting our Year 1 classes throughout the term, hearing more about their learning and seeing their confidence grow as they ‘present’ their opinions to the class.
Year 2 students have embraced the start of the new year with excitement, especially as they begin learning in a different school building to the past two years! New routines have been established, and students are putting in great effort across all areas of learning. In their English unit, Year 2 students are exploring the different traits of characters in familiar stories. They are working towards creating and presenting a talk about a chosen character to their peers.
During our Year 2 learning walks this week, students were already able to talk about what they are learning about and why and were beginning to discuss the artefacts around the room and the learning wall which help them with their learning. Impressive stuff for week 3!
I look forward to updating you on the progress of our P-2 students in week 6 newsletter.
Playground Buddies
We are excited to introduce our 2025 Playground Buddies: Luke, Anna, Sloane, Charlotte, Poppy, Cybelle, Luna, Abby A, Ruby, Ella, Sabrina, Harriet, Eve, Vyolette, and Abby M. These Year 6 leaders support our Prep and Year 1 students during playtime at first break each day. Whether it's playing games, starting new activities, or simply offering friendship, our Playground Buddies are looking forward to their new leadership role and connecting with our younger students.
