Sounds-Write

Did you know Bulimba State School uses an evidence-informed approach to teach reading? Sounds-Write is the program we have adopted and is based on the strongest body research, The Science of Reading, that guides the best methods for teaching children to read.

Explicit instruction is the key pedagogical practice used to teach Sounds-Write and this consistent way of teaching enables our students to learn in a structured, predictable and supportive environment. We are already seeing success with prep students who are deeply engaged in their daily Sounds-Write lessons. Our preppies are learning how each sound is represented, how to segment a word to pull a part its individual sounds and also blend sounds together to build words. It’s a joy seeing their faces light up when they have written a CVC word on their whiteboards and then show us how they can read the word back!

The Sounds-Write program was introduced at Bulimba to our Prep cohort in 2023 and these students continue to use this way of working in Year 2. We have now trained all Prep, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and some Inclusion teachers who are implementing this high-quality program with fidelity. Sounds-Write is an investment that comes with a four-day intensive training course for our teachers. We are committed to rolling out this program through the whole school to build stronger readers and writers across all year levels.
