DEPUTY PRINCIPAL PREP - YEAR 2

Week 3, Term 2 P-2 News

Hello to all our wonderful Bulimba families, and welcome to Term 2! I hope you’ve enjoyed the recent long weekends with your family and are feeling energised for a busy term ahead.

We’re kicking off the term with excitement as we prepare for a favourite annual tradition – Under 8s Day! This special event celebrates the importance of early learning and promises a morning full of fun and connection for our Prep to Year 2 students.

Save the Date:
Friday 23rd May
9:00–10:30am
Bottom Oval, Middle Oval & Multipurpose Courts

This year’s celebration is shaping up to be bigger than ever, with even more local businesses, kindergartens, and community groups joining in. Children can look forward to a range of interactive stalls, creative activities, and hands-on experiences, in line with the Under 8s theme – ‘unleashing scientific thinking through play’.

To help the day run smoothly, we’re looking for many parent volunteers to assist with setting up, supervising student groups, and packing up after the event. If you’re able to lend a hand, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Don’t forget to inform your child’s teacher of any food allergies your child may have so we can ensure all students are catered for during the sausage sizzle.

In the Classroom
Our Prep–Year 2 learners have settled back into the rhythm of school with great energy. This term, each year level is focusing on informative texts in English. Students are exploring how these texts differ from imaginative stories by examining features like headings, factual language, images, and layout.

There’s something about nonfiction texts that children just love - discovering and sharing interesting facts about different topics. Here are some fun facts that have been shared with me:
Seeds (Year 2)
"Did you know? A tiny seed can grow into a HUGE tree! It’s like magic — but real!"
Cats (Prep)
"Cats can jump really, really high — even higher than a tall table! And they land like ninjas!"
Wombats (Year 1)
"Wombats do square poos! Like little brown building blocks — how funny is that?!"

As students delve into topics like Australian animals, pets, insects, farm life, and life cycles, their learning walls are filling with vocabulary, diagrams, and student work that showcase their growing knowledge.

Each year level is building on their writing skills this term through writing an informative text:

  • Prep: Begin to write words and phrases about a topic, using their letter-sound knowledge. This will build to learning how to write a simple sentence about a topic.
  • Year 1: Begin by writing simple ‘factual’ sentences about familiar animals and learn how to use different adjectives and precise verbs to add detail to their writing.
  • Year 2: Expand their writing to include compound sentences, descriptive vocabulary, and include the structure of an informative text.

Celebrating Culture and Connection: P-2 Indigenous Insights Incursion

On Wednesday, our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students were treated to a rich and meaningful cultural experience through an incursion hosted by Indigenous Insights, led by the inspiring Sharron mirii Bell.

Sharron is a proud Wiradjuri Gamilaraay woman who has been sharing her cultural knowledge and passion since founding Indigenous Insights in 2005. With a focus on Early Childhood, Cultural Education and Wellbeing, Sharron brings a unique blend of traditional and contemporary elements to her teaching through music, art, storytelling and craft.

Sharron captivated our young learners with Dreaming stories, songs, and dances, sharing a powerful message of connection to land, water, and community. Her warmth and authenticity created a safe, respectful space where our P-2 students engaged through musical activities that enriched their understanding of First Nations culture.

We are incredibly grateful to Sharron mirii Bell for bringing her knowledge and spirit to our school community. Experiences like these help foster respect, curiosity and connection—core values we strive to instil in all of our students.

Prep 2026 Transition
If you have a child starting Prep at Bulimba SS in 2026, we’re excited to welcome your family! Please follow the steps below to begin the enrolment process:

Step 1 – Complete and submit the enrolment application form located on our school’s website: https://bulimbass.eq.edu.au/
Step 2 – Book a 20-minute parent/child ‘meet and greet’, held on Fridays in Term 2.
Step 3 – Attend upcoming transition events (see attached Term 2 flyer)

We offer a wide range of transition activities each term to support children and families as they get to know our school environment. We also work closely with local kindergartens to create a smooth, supportive path into Prep, ensuring continuity and positive experiences for every child.

We can’t wait for what this term has in store and look forward to connecting with you at Under 8s Day and other upcoming events!
