Music News

Why is music education important?

Music education plays a vital role in the development of primary school students. Learning an instrument, singing in a choir, and participating in band rehearsals help children build confidence, teamwork, and perseverance. These activities also support cognitive skills like memory, attention, and problem-solving, while enhancing language and literacy through singing and listening. Music provides a joyful way to express emotions, appreciate different cultures, and develop a lifelong love for the arts. Most importantly, it brings students together in a fun and creative environment where they can grow both personally and socially.

We are so lucky to have so many music opportunities available to our students at Bulimba State School. Did you know that all students attend a 30 minute classroom music lesson every week, along with the opportunities to join a range of other ensembles as they progress through the year levels?

What’s happening in the music department?

Our rehearsal and Instrumental timetable is as follows:

Monday:

  • Senior Choir (year 4, 5 and 6) – 8am in the music room (Teacher – Andrea Schache)

Tuesday:

  • Concert Band – 7:30am in the hall (Cindy Beumer)
  • String Ensemble – 7:45am in the music room (Fan Yang)
  • Grade 4 Instrumental music lessons (Cindy Beumer)
  • Ukulele and Percussion Band (year 3, 4, 5 and 6) – 10:40am in the music room (Andrea Schache)

Wednesday:

  • Big Band – 7:45 in the Instrumental music room (Cindy Beumer)
  • Grade 5 and 5 Instrumental music lessons (Cindy Beumer)

Thursday:

  • Junior Choir (year 2 and 3) – 8am in the music room (Andrea Schache)

Please note – if a before school rehearsal is cancelled due to teacher absence, the teacher in charge of that rehearsal will notify you via e-mail as soon as possible.

Choral Fanfare

Thank you to all parents and caregivers for providing permission for your choir learners to attend our Choral Fanfare excursion in week 7. Families have been invoiced for this excursion and reminder will be sent home within the coming weeks.

Our performance at Choral Fanfare is on Friday 6th June. All choir students will travel to Holland Park State High School by bus for this performance. Parents are welcome to meet us there. It is free to attend to watch our performance.

Our session begins at 10am and our Senior Choir is the first choir to perform for the day. The Junior Choir is scheduled to perform 4th in the session and the session is due to finish at 12:25pm. I am unable to give specific performance times as the schedule for the day remains flexible to accommodate last minute changes.

While we are at Holland Park State High School, students will have time to eat brain food (Junior Choir) and morning tea. We will return to Bulimba State School for second break.

Please contact ascha64@eq.edu.au if you have any questions.

At home practice

All learners who participate in our ensembles should be setting aside time each week for practice time.

Choir members need to be practicing the lyrics to our performance songs. It is really important that these lyrics are memorized ASAP so that we can spend our rehearsals working on all of the extra bits and pieces that will make our performances amazing!

All Instrumental music students (both band and strings) should have a practice schedule set up for their week. Everyone lives busy lives, so scheduling in 4 or 5 10 – 20 minute practices in to your week will make it so much easier to make sure that practice requirements are being met. At home practice is essential to ensure that your child is progressing in their instrumental learning and is feeling successful.
