Hello Bulimba community, I’m Lisa Price, Acting Deputy Principal for Y3-6 and can I just start by saying thank you for warmly welcoming me into this role. It’s been wonderful to connect with so many students and families over these past couple of weeks and I look forward to meeting many more of you. And can I just say, that so far, one of the best starts to my day has been when I donned a high-vis vest and stepped in to help Bulimba students cross Oxford St safely, when one of our lovely crossing supervisors was absent. Greeting families and seeing students with their bright, fresh faces at the beginning of the school day was so lovely. We really do have the best school community at Bulimba.
NAPLAN & Wellbeing
This week we wish our Year 3 and 5 students good luck with their NAPLAN tests which begin today and continue into next week. Whilst there is often a lot of discussion around how to prepare for NAPLAN, I thought I’d turn my attention this week to consider how to support your child after NAPLAN, with a focus on their wellbeing.
✅ Celebrate effort, not just results
Regardless of how your child thinks they went, praise their effort and positive attitude. NAPLAN is just one part of their learning journey.
✅ Keep conversations light
Avoid dwelling on how your student performed. Instead, focus on other things they enjoyed about their day and remind them that learning happens every day, not just in tests.
✅ Encourage fun and relaxation
Try and plan some enjoyable activities after school to help your child unwind. Play, creativity, sports and social time are just as important as academics.
Harmony Day
Next week is Harmony Week and our school is celebrating Harmony Day on Friday 21st March. Harmony Day is a day where we come together to celebrate the cultural diversity we have in our community and to spread the message that ‘everyone belongs’ at Bulimba.
On Friday, students are invited to wear cultural clothing or the colour orange.
Your child may be curious about Harmony Day or ask questions about why orange is the colour we wear in support of cultural diversity on Harmony Day. Orange was chosen because it represents meaningful communication, freedom of ideas and the encouragement of mutual respect. For us here at Bulimba, these connect strongly with our Bulimba Bee values and are also enacted through classroom circle time practices and restorative conversations.
Classes connect with Harmony Day in a variety of ways. Often this is through sharing stories, reading books that have diversity as a theme, creating individual or collaborative artworks, listening to music or exploring maps. However it’s celebrated, Harmony Day is marked by our school because it’s about coming together to share, learn and appreciate the rich diversity we have right here in our school community.
Sounds-Write
Did you know Bulimba State School uses an evidence-informed approach to teach reading? Sounds-Write is the program we have adopted and is based on the strongest body research, The Science of Reading, that guides the best methods for teaching children to read.
Explicit instruction is the key pedagogical practice used to teach Sounds-Write and this consistent way of teaching enables our students to learn in a structured, predictable and supportive environment. We are already seeing success with prep students who are deeply engaged in their daily Sounds-Write lessons. Our preppies are learning how each sound is represented, how to segment a word to pull a part its individual sounds and also blend sounds together to build words. It’s a joy seeing their faces light up when they have written a CVC word on their whiteboards and then show us how they can read the word back!
The Sounds-Write program was introduced at Bulimba to our Prep cohort in 2023 and these students continue to use this way of working in Year 2. We have now trained all Prep, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and some Inclusion teachers who are implementing this high-quality program with fidelity. Sounds-Write is an investment that comes with a four-day intensive training course for our teachers. We are committed to rolling out this program through the whole school to build stronger readers and writers across all year levels.

Programs for years P-2
Mathematics of Board Games
Research shows that playing board games is directly linked with the success in mathematics, the more different board games a child plays the better his/her performance in maths. Detecting patterns, predicting outcomes, problem solving and logical thinking are only some of the mathematical skills students will be using and developing during this program. Most importantly, they will reflect on processes and deconstruct games, change the rules to influence the outcome, and manipulate the type of mathematical skills needed to complete the game, all of this while having fun.
The Power of Words: Hands on Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is an essential life skill that helps children think on their feet, formulate and argue their point of view, which leads to an increase sense of confidence. Through interactive, hands-on activities, this program will be an opportunity to develop creative thinking skills, as well as the ability to structure arguments and articulate thoughts clearly. Join us for some fun at The Power of Words: Hands on Critical Thinking program.
Programs for years 3-5
The Best Move: Mathematics of Games
Mathematics is not just about numbers and formulas. Games are ways we can experience the beauty of mathematics all around us. From probability to combinatorics and game theory, this program will provide an opportunity to explore the depth of advanced mathematical concepts, as well as to develop skills such as multi-step problem solving, spatial reasoning and pattern recognition by integrating deeper mathematical thinking into gameplay.
How to Win an Argument
Have you got something to say? This program will help you build the confidence and persuasive skills necessary to advance your opinions, persuade people and entertain an audience. Learning how to scrutinize arguments, analyze ideas and articulate opinions is an essential skill for students that will help them in their schooling, in the workplace and in everyday life. At the Days of Excellence How to Win an Argument program students will learn how to incorporate style, substance and structure to create powerful and entertaining speeches. The workshops provide fun, interactive activities designed to teach critical thinking, rhetoric and strategy that will help students to use their intelligence and quick-thinking to their best advantage.
Programs for years 6-8
Mathematics of City Design
Geometry, algebra, and trigonometry play a crucial role in architectural design. Architects apply these math forms to plan their urban environments. From the use of Geometry in designing city layouts of roads, parks, and buildings, to the use of Mathematical Modelling to predict future needs of a growing city by investigating the expanding traffic and housing needs, this program will give the opportunity of a hands-on investigation of advanced mathematics applied to city design.
The Voice: Developing One’s Unique Persuasive Voice
This program will focus on one of the key aspects of writing: developing one’s own style, language and viewpoints. Guided by writers and using a variety of stimuli, including hands on activities, students will have the opportunity to explore and experiment with creative methods to inspire them to develop their arguments with originality, strength and power.
We are looking forward to working with your students at the Days of Excellence programs.
