Our Journey with Sounds-Write
Over the past three years, our school has been on an exciting journey to strengthen the way we teach reading and spelling. We have adopted Sounds-Write, a highly effective, evidence-based structured synthetic phonics program that gives students the essential building blocks for becoming confident readers and spellers.
We began this journey in 2023 by training our Prep teachers so that our youngest learners could build strong foundations in phonics from their very first year of school. Since then, we have gradually extended training across year levels, ensuring consistency and progression as children move through their schooling. At the beginning of next term, our Year 5 teachers will begin their training, marking another important step in embedding Sounds-Write right across the school.
In the early years, Sounds-Write focuses on helping students understand how the sounds of speech map onto letters and letter combinations. This systematic approach supports children to crack the code of reading. As students move into the upper years, the focus shifts towards spelling and word knowledge, helping them develop accuracy, fluency, and confidence in their writing.
For families who would like to learn more about Sounds-Write and how it supports children’s literacy, there are many useful resources and links to Podcasts on the Sounds-Write website: https://sounds-write.co.uk/support-for-parents-and-carers/
We are proud of the progress we are making across the school and excited to see the positive impact Sounds-Write continues to have on our students’ learning.
Prep Indigenous Insights Excursion
This week, our Prep students enjoyed an exciting walking excursion around our local area. We set off from Bulimba State School and began by exploring the beautiful wall mural at the front of our school, learning about the stories and artwork that make it so special. Along the way, the children discovered the unique magpie lark lights and found out why they are an important feature in our community.
Our walk continued down to the Brisbane River, where students had the chance to observe the river environment and talk about its significance to Bulimba. After a morning of learning and exploring, we stopped at Love Street Park to enjoy lunch and some playtime before heading back to school.
It was a wonderful day of hands-on learning, discovery, and connection to our local community!

Prep Transition
It has been lovely welcoming our 2026 Prep children and their families to Bulimba through our various transition events this year. Today, we held our very first orientation morning, where our pre-preppies took part in an Art lesson with Miss Jane and explored the wonders of STEM with Ms O’Neill. We were so impressed by how confidently our future Preps settled into each class and the enthusiasm they brought to their learning.
Next Friday, our second orientation morning will welcome another group of pre-preps, who will enjoy PE with Mr Bryant and Music with Mrs Schache.
For a full overview of the Prep Transition opportunities available next term, please see the attached flyer.

Bulimba’s Got Talent
On Wednesday, the hall was buzzing with excitement as the finalists of Bulimba’s Got Talent took to the stage to showcase their incredible talents. The audience was wowed by a jaw-dropping magic show, energetic and polished dance groups, the beautiful sounds of the piano, and the powerful rhythms of a drums. Each act brought its own spark, creating an afternoon full of energy, creativity and school spirit.
Our school leaders Lola, Olive, Boston and Max kept the crowd laughing and cheering with their quick wit, fun costumes and friendly banter, making the show flow seamlessly from one performance to the next. It was wonderful to see students, staff and families all joining in the celebration of talent.
Congratulations to Felix in 5M and Zoe and Madison in 4J who won Bulimba’s Got Talent 2025! A special thank you goes to our Arts Captains, Saige and Eloise, as well as Mrs Schache, Mrs Lordan and Mr Klarwein, whose hard work and support throughout the term and on the day helped bring this unforgettable event to life. Bulimba’s Got Talent was truly a celebration of our students’ courage and creativity!

Bulimba P&C Book Review Competition
Our wonderful P&C recently ran a Book Review Competition, providing a fantastic opportunity for students who love reading and writing to share their passion for literature. The competition attracted many entries, with students recommending some truly fantastic books. Every entrant received a Yo-Chi voucher – a sweet reward that will no doubt be enjoyed!
We are delighted to announce that local Bulimba resident and award-winning children’s author and illustrator, Sophie Beer, selected Philippa Wilson (3WB) as the winner of the competition for her review of Charlotte’s Web. On parade this week, Sophie presented Philippa with a very generous prize pack of vouchers and books. Congratulations, Philippa!
All of the book reviews are proudly on display at the BCC Bulimba Library, so be sure to pop down and take a look. You might just discover your child’s next great read there!
The P&C also generously donated some of Sophie Beer’s books to our library, which Sophie proudly signed.

Year 5 Clay Workshop – The Animal Within
Our Year 5 students recently took part in a hands-on clay workshop, supported by talented visiting artists Ky and Nico. As part of their visual art unit, The Animal Within, students explored the process of designing, sculpting and glazing their own animal creations. With guidance, students experimented with a range of tools and techniques, carefully shaping their clay into professional-looking sculptures full of personality and creativity.
Workshops like these give students the chance to see their learning come to life in exciting and meaningful ways. Beyond developing artistic skills, these experiences create lasting memories that deepen their understanding and appreciation of art.
Thank you Mrs Davis and the Year 5 Team for helping to facilitate this workshop.
