Circle Time
“Let’s circle up” is a phrase you’ll hear throughout the week at Bulimba, as it signals the beginning of Circle Time. Circle Time is one of our signature school practices and is aligned to our school’s Annual Implementation Plan. Staff and students all engage in Circle Time sessions as they foster connection, self-awareness, emotional intelligence and a positive culture.
I’ve had the pleasure of leading Circle Time in 5B, alongside Mrs Brayne. All students are respectful, courageous, compassionate and completely engaged right throughout our sessions.
First, we begin by ‘meeting up’. This helps to bring the group together and provides a sense of fun and enjoyment. Students make silent statements with their body to show their agreement or connectedness to prompts such as, ‘Do you like pineapple on pizza?’ Have you visited the library today? ‘Are you playing sport on the Saturday?’
Following this, we use a speaking object that is passed around the circle and students are asked to respond to questions. One that 5B responded to was, ’What are you trying to get better at?’ In response, I heard many students refer to their desire to improve their sporting skills, be a kinder sister/brother, regulate their emotions, and reach their learning goals. These questions offer an opportunity to learn more about each other.
In another circle time session, 5B students tried very hard to get toothpaste back into the tube after it had been all squeezed out by Matilda. The toothpaste acted as an analogy to demonstrate and discuss how difficult it is to take back words once they have been said.
To close off circle time, students have the opportunity to give a heartfelt thanks to others in the circle.
Here are what some 5B learners think about Circle Time.
Pierre – “Circle Time is where we can share what’s on our mind. It’s a good place. It’s a safe space.”
Holly – “You get to share all your ideas with everyone. After Circle Time I feel like I have lots in common with everybody.”
Spencer R – “I like connecting with my classmates and hearing about what they are up to or thinking about. I feel happy when I get to know more about my class.”
Liam – “Today I learnt that once words come out, they’re hard to get back in. They’re just out there, like with the toothpaste.”
Needless to say, I’m already looking forward to my next Circle Time session with 5B.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is on again for another year. PRC is an annual statewide initiative which aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning. It is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life.
Children who complete the challenge will have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement.
To complete the Premier's Reading Challenge, students are to read or experience the number of books indicated below:
- Prep to Year 2—read or experience 20 books.
- Years 3 to 4—read 20 books.
This week, all students should have received a school reader record form. Please use this to record the books read during the challenge. More forms will be available in the library, or can be printed directly from the Premier’s Reading Challenge website.
Thank you Mrs King Koi for being our wonderful PRC school coordinator.
School Photos
School photos will take place on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th June (Week 9). Your child’s class teacher will communicate their photo day through their usual class communication channels soon. Photo order forms have been distributed. Please check your child’s bag for theirs.
Sibling photos – For those interested in sibling photos, these will be taken before school at 8am.
Extra-curricular photos – If your child’s photo is taken in sports, music, environmental or leaders’ photos, they will be given an order form soon after photo day so that you can place an order.
All students are to wear the correct full uniform for their photo. Band students are encouraged to bring their instrument to school for their band photo.
Mobile Phones & Smart Watches
Mobile phones and smart watches are expensive items of technology and are not covered by any Education Queensland insurance policy if lost or stolen. It is inappropriate for students to have a mobile phone in their school bag during the school day or to have a networked smart watch.
If it is necessary for your child to bring a mobile phone to school, our Student Code of Conduct states that the mobile phone must be presented to the school office at the beginning of the school day. It will then be stored in a secure location until the end of the school day when your child will be able to collect it from the school office.
If a mobile phone is seen on a student’s person or in their bag, students will be required to take the device to the office for collection by the student at 3.00pm. If a student wears a smart watch to school, parents and students are responsible for ensuring it is set to ‘schooltime’ or ‘aeroplane mode’. As outlined in our Student Code of Conduct, repeated infractions will result in parents being contacted and possible disciplinary action.
DEPUTY PRINCIPAL PREP - YEAR 2
P-2 News by Mrs Turnbull
A Fantastic Celebration for Under 8s Day!
Last Friday morning was filled with so much excitement as we celebrated Under 8s Day with a wonderful range of activities and community spirit. This annual event continues to grow each year, and many attendees shared that this year was the most enjoyable one yet!
Thank you to the many parents and grandparents who gave their time to make the morning run so smoothly—whether it was guiding groups of students through activities, managing the barbecue (shoutout to Dad’s Camp!), setting up marquees, or helping pack down afterwards, your support made a huge difference.

We were thrilled to welcome a fantastic group of local businesses and early learning centres who contributed to the day’s success:
- Bulimba Community Kindergarten
- Tugulawa Early Education
- Harmony Early Education Balmoral
- Harmony Early Education Balmoral
- Balmoral House Private Preschool
- Kick Dance
- Sprout and Soar
- Spartans Basketball
- SJJA Jujitsu
- Craft Camp
- QLD Firebirds Netball
- My First Gym
- Crackerjack Toys
- Brumbys
- Recharged Coffee Van
It was also a pleasure to have in attendance Di Farmer, Member for Bulimba, and several new families who are joining our school community for Prep 2026, along with our Year 6 Balmoral SHS helpers and our Year 6 playground buddies and special events team.
Finally, a huge thank you goes to Mrs Buglass and Miss Linda for your behind-the-scenes organisation that led to such a successful event and to our dedicated P-2 teachers, school staff and school’s P&C for facilitating a range of fun activities, many of which reflected the 2025 theme of Under 8s Day – Unleashing Scientific Thinking Through Play.
Days like these remind us of the strength of our school community and the joy of learning through play.
Introducing the Wonder Workshop: A Space for Imagination and Play
Have you heard about our school’s newest addition? The Wonder Workshop is an exciting new space designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and collaboration in our youngest learners.
Located in its own dedicated classroom, the Wonder Workshop invites students to step away from their regular learning environment and dive into a world of imaginative, sensory, and creative play. Here, students are free to explore role-playing, storytelling, and make-believe adventures; activities that not only fire up their imaginations but also build important social skills like communication, cooperation, and negotiation.
During lunch breaks, our Prep to Year 2 students have embraced the Wonder Workshop with open arms. Many have even taken part in helping establish the space’s expectations, ensuring it remains a welcoming and well-maintained area for other year levels to enjoy throughout the week.
The Wonder Workshop is already proving to be a cherished part of our school day; a place where learning meets wonder, and where every child has the chance to dream, create, and connect.
If you have any items to donate to the Wonder Workshop, please see the flyer below:
Welcoming Our Future Prep Families
This term has been full of wonderful opportunities to welcome our incoming 2026 Prep families to the school community. From enrolment interviews to school tours and those who attended our Under 8s Day, we’ve loved getting to know the new faces who will soon be part of our school.
Visiting families often comment on how friendly and inclusive our school feels, and we couldn’t agree more! It’s always a pleasure to showcase our vibrant learning spaces and the warm, welcoming community created by our staff and students.
If you’re planning to enrol your child for Prep in 2026, don’t forget to complete the enrolment form available on our school website or email Admin@bulimbass.eq.edu.au to find out more.
Celebrating Success at Principal’s Afternoon Tea
Friday afternoons have become a cherished tradition at our school - not just because the weekend is near, but because it’s time for Principal’s Afternoon Tea!
Each Friday at 2:15pm, selected students from every class have the opportunity to present their learning to Mr. Goulter, Mrs. Price, and myself. This special gathering alternates weekly between our Early Phase students (Prep–Year 2) and Upper Phase students (Years 3–6), allowing us to hear from students across all year levels.
It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the effort and progress happening in our classrooms. Last week, I captured some of our Prep to Year 2 students who proudly showcased their work and shared explanations of what they’ve been learning about. We were so impressed with their thoughtful reflections and confidence with speaking in front of peers from other classes.
To recognise their achievements, each student receives a certificate, a Principal’s Award sticker, and of course, a small treat to enjoy.
Principal’s Afternoon Tea is a weekly highlight that brings joy and pride to our learners. We look forward to it every week!

Back by Popular Demand – Open Classroom Returns!
Following the wonderful response to our Open Classroom event last year, we’re excited to bring it back this term! Join us in Week 9 for this special opportunity to step inside your child’s learning environment and experience firsthand the high-quality teaching and learning happening every day at Bulimba.
Event Details:
? Tuesday 17 June and Wednesday 18 June
? 2:30 – 3:00pm (both days)
Parents and carers are welcome to attend one afternoon (or both if you have more than one child to visit). There is no need to register or RSVP for this event – just turn up to your preferred afternoon.
During the Open Classroom event, your child will guide you on a learning walk through their English unit. They’ll explain the visible learning wall or “Bump It Up” wall, discuss key artefacts that support their learning, share learning goals, and proudly showcase some of their writing achievements so far.
Thank you for supporting this initiative. Our students can’t wait to show off their learning!
Music News
Music education is a wonderful way for children to express themselves, build confidence, and have fun while learning. It helps develop important skills like listening, memory, and teamwork. Whether it’s singing, playing an instrument, or moving to the beat, music brings joy and creativity into the classroom—and helps young minds grow!
Winter Concert
We are looking forward to our ‘Winter Concert’ in week 9!
All music teachers will be in contact with their ensemble groups individually in the coming weeks to provide information on how the evening will run.
If your child is unable to attend this concert, please let your ensemble teacher know ASAP.
Choral Fanfare
Next week is our Choral Fanfare excursion for the Junior and Senior Choirs!
Parents are welcome to come along to Holland Park State High School to watch us perform. There is no cost for audience members.
There are a few families with outstanding payments – please contact the office to make payment ASAP.
Please make sure all choir members are practicing their songs in the lead up to this excursion.
Keep an eye out for an e-mail from Andrea Schache, early next week for information about where to meet and what to bring!
Beginner Band Workshop
Each year, students new to the band program are invited to attend the Beginner Band Workshop—a valuable and enjoyable event where students from across the region come together to make music in a supportive and structured setting. The day focuses on building confidence, strengthening musical fundamentals, and experiencing the joy of playing in a large ensemble. This year’s workshop will be held on Wednesday, 25 June at Balmoral State High School. Families are warmly invited to a short performance at 2:15pm.
Consent requests and invoices have been sent home via QParents.
“La festa della repubblica”
In Italy, June 2nd is the celebration of “La festa della repubblica” – Italy’s national day. On Monday, we celebrated with special activities in Italian lessons.
On June 2nd in 1946, the Italian people voted in a referendum to decide whether they wanted to continue being a monarchy or to become a republic and elect a president as their head of state. Importantly, this date also marked the first time that women were allowed to vote in Italy. The people chose to become a republic and the Italian royal family was asked to leave the country. June 2nd marks the birth and unification of the Italian Republic. Every year, Italians celebrate their national day with a public holiday and patriotic military parades.
ITALIAN DRESS DAY: On Monday 267th May we had an Italian Dress Day. A big grazie to everyone who helped make La festa della repubblica such a success! The school was alive with color, culture, and community spirit. Students looked fantastic in their free dress, many embracing the Italian theme with style and creativity.

Balmoral SHS is currently taking enrolments for 2026 and beyond and would like to provide families with the QR codes to easily access enrolment information. The also have an exciting new program beginning in 2026 – IGNITE. This STEAM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program has been designed to be innovative, academically challenging, and to inspire learning pathways for students with interests in these areas. See the flyer for more information!
Tickets for our major social event of the year, "The Big Night Out", are on sale now at www.bulimbasspc.org.au/bno. Our theme is "Let's Dance" and this year we’ve made some exciting changes! Our winning team on the night will be a combination of Dance Performance and Auction Item.
DANCE - Each team selects an iconic movie dance scene to rehearse and perform at the event. Come dressed to suit your scene. You have the option of pre-recording the dance routine if you are a bit shy about performing live or simply come along and watch! On the spot prizes for teams that dance on the night.
AUCTION - Each team donates an item for auction, utilising connections, skills and creativity of team members. Build it, buy it, or borrow it and help us knock our fundraising target out of the ballpark! Over the years, teams have spent more and more money on table decorations that mostly get thrown in the venue’s skip bin the following day. We thought it would be great to (a) stop the landfill and (b) redirect that creativity into raising money for the school and our kids.
Your ticket includes a delicious array of finger food throughout the night (the event is being run by our VP David Finlayson, chef and hospitality extraordinaire), a welcome drink, 5 raffle tickets, live entertainment and a few more surprises along the way. Lots of comfy seating, high tables, low tables, lounge areas, and chill out spaces.
Gather your team and grab your tickets before they’re all gone! We can’t wait to see you there. Email the team for more info: events@bulimbasspc.org.au
